But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” – Rev 21:8
But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie. – Rev 22:15
We often skim over such lists as this, reading it, but not letting it read us where we let the light shine into our heart and life to see if we are who such is described. Perhaps in the descriptions below, we may identify and deal with what the light reveals. For the grave words Jesus has spoken are not ones we should skim over but heed.
The cowardly & unbelieving
They are those who make life decisions, small or significant, based upon one thing – what it will cost them. If anything takes away from their comfort level, they will not even look at it as an option because they are full of fear of all kinds, and fear is the driving force in any decision-making. They cannot be people who are faithful to the Lord because He is not Lord of their lives; they are. The cowardly and unbelieving are synonymous as they can’t go without the other. To be cowardly is to also be unbelieving. To be unbelieving is also one who is cowardly. Many go to the Cross of Christ and readily accept Him for what He has done and His forgiveness of sin – generally, but stop short of receiving His grace so they may partake with Him His death and resurrected life. By this, they do not go on with the Lord, to receive His new life through His resurrection. To compensate, they gravitate to earthly (not Spirit-led) teachers and who preach what will make them feel good. Anything that is Spirit-led or inspired will not be understood and will often be offensive. Anyone who professes Jesus Christ, who has a hard time understanding the scriptures, or even taking enjoyment from reading them, may mean that they have not ‘continued and believed on with the Lord’ for the completeness of His work on the cross and saving power.
But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. – 1 Cor 2:14.
To be an abomination to God is His rejection in the highest regard with hatred and contempt. The opposite meaning of abomination is to be acceptable or Holy in His sight. Only the Blood of Jesus covers us and by it we are pleasing to God. We cannot take for granted the blood of Jesus and continue to live unholy lives. He sanctifies us (sets us apart) for His own use so that we can and will live lives for Him to not, is to lack understanding and reverence of the Holy God we serve.
Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.” – 1 Peter 1:13-16
Anyone angry in his heart against another is in danger it being counted as murder, according to what Jesus says in Matt 5:21-26. In this passage, Jesus gives us His way of dealing with difficult and evil people/situations and is always the way of reconciliation. Our heart never betrays what is inside by what comes out from it, and it is in difficult situations that we can see what it contains.
Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. Matt 12:34.
This is why we must be vigilant to not walk in our heart of flesh, but instead in the new heart that Christ died to give to us, for out of it will spring rivers of living water!
He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” John 7:38
Whoever engages in sexual activity – that is unlawful before God is those who are sexually immoral. It is a sin that is different from other sins, for we sin against our own body when we engage. Jesus said that to lust after a woman – adultery is already committed in the heart. The level of depravity in our society is revealed through the acceptance and promotion of sexual immorality. We are to keep ourselves from sexual immorality, regardless of what the world allows. 1 Cor 6:13-20.
This word is not limited to its obvious meaning but also means anything that induces in us mind influence and alteration—one of which being drugs. Never before are we reaching for drugs due to mental (mind) issues. The Churches ‘signature’ is that we are a people with a sound mind because Jesus is our peace. We do not reach for drugs, but we believe on the Lord. Manipulation is another form of sorcery – for it is conducted through mind-controlling influence. Under it, many are often guilt and fear – of displeasing the one who exercises in it. We are not to fear nor seek approval of men, women or child and when we do, we are partaking in sorcery. Witchcraft and Satanism have come to the forefront and are generally accepted, with books and television programs becoming trendy and not only glamorized but sexualized as too. To engage in this as our form of entertainment is to be as one partaking in sorcery. Sorcery can even be practiced among believers who major on the moving and power of the Holy Spirit apart from Jesus Christ and His Gospel and the Word. They seek manifestation and an emotional high rather than Jesus Christ Himself. The invoke strange fire and are under its influence and will mock the Word of God by desiring such manifestations over Him.
“I still have many things to say to you,but you cannot bear them now. However, when He,the Spirit of truth, has come,He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. John 16:12-14
What does an idolator do that God hates so much? They give allegiance and ultimately will worship things and people seeking from these – pleasure, comfort, peace, love – which is nothing more than an escape from acknowledging their sin, and the Jesus is Lord. Idolatry is committed whenever we allow something to enslave our heart (other than God); Hosea 4:11. Addiction is one form of idolatry. Jesus has said that you cannot serve another god and at the same time serve God – you will (always) love the one and hate the other.
“No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”– Luke 16:13.
Who is the father of lies, but Satan; anyone who speaks lies is speaking the devil’s ‘word.’ John 8:44. We lie through justifying ourselves of wrong-doing in our hearts, and most often, this is where the lie is born. Sin always deceives. The light of God is not found in the liar, for light cannot dwell with darkness. Light will expose darkness but never join it; 1 John 1:5-7.
What must we Endure – against?
We should not walk as fools, who say they may sin – because they have an Advocate who will intercede and forgive them; 2 John 1:1-2. Having this kind of mindset indicates something is wrong. Jesus is clear in His warning He gave in Revelation – that this notion is a contradiction. When the Spirit of God dwells in us, as we participate with His leading and conviction through the Word of God, we will walk in the light, as He is in the light; 1 John 1: 7. We will always sin, but His light will expose it, so we may receive His cleansing – as we acknowledge and forsake it—those who continue to walk in sin hide from the Light of truth and are in darkness.
If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. – 1 John 1:6
An invisible snare
The snare of every believer is laziness. It will overtake us if we become complacent in our faith. Jesus revealed that it is ‘wicked’ in Matt 25:26 and that whoever practices it will be prohibited from entering eternal glory with the Lord.
Our ability to overcome and endure is not a matter of our will nor strong determination but our willingness to walk in who we believe to be the author and finisher of our faith. To believe is to leave (the old life and fleshly lusts and fear) and cleave to the Lord Jesus Christ where we serve Him with our lives, so He is not only our Savior but also our Lord.
For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones.“For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. – Ephes 5:30-32
