A Day in the Life of the 10 Virgins

The group gathered together with great anticipation and excitement because they would soon be meeting their Bridegroom.  They would talk about Him for hours, share their love for Him with each other, and sing songs and pray together about and to Him.  They would read the book He left for them, and study it, and encourage one another in what it said.  They would make sure they had oil in their lamps so they had the Light in them to see what was true.  This was not optional for them but for their very life.  For they knew that they could easily be deceived if they did not make sure they had His Light to shine for them so they may see the Truth.  It was His gift to them (His Oil) when they committed themselves to Him.  So they would make sure they did not let it go to waste for it was His and they needed to care for it in all they did.  Not everyone who gathered in this group thought as these 5 did, for there were 5 others who sat off to the side and would laugh at these (under their breath), saying they were way too serious for the Master loves all who believe in Him.  They said that all they needed was faith and they were perfectly acceptable to Him as they were, flaws and all because they said He is a master who is loving and kind full of endless grace.  So, they would get bored in many of the discussions, and in some, they just would not understand what these fanatics were even saying!   They had lamps, but never really needed to have them lit, for when they gathered together, there was always enough light from the others, so they didn’t want to waste their oil.  Their lamps had the oil in them when they first got them and were quite proud of this fact. They did not realize that this lamp oil, requires them to use it and in this way it is continually refreshed and to not use it was to have the supply become depleted; 1 Thess 5:19.

Well, the time finally came:

“Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.  Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish. Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them, but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.  But while the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept.

“And at midnight a cry was heard: ‘Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!’  Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps.  And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’  But the wise answered, saying, ‘No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’  And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding, and the door was shut.

“Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, ‘Lord, Lord, open to us!’  But he answered and said, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.’

“Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.”    Matt 25:1-13

We are sealed with the Holy Spirit that promises us what is to come, our Salvation.  2 Cor 1:22, Ephes 1:12-14

The Spirit is not something that is to lay dormant.  But it is active, personable and to be respected, and is given to us as our Teacher and Guide.  Though He is a gift to us, upon our confession of Jesus Christ, we must participate with Him, the Spirit in all that we do.  It is those who are led by the Spirit – that are counted as the Lord’s; Romans 8:14.

Christian Religion today, allows anyone to be accepted and is what Jesus describes as the ‘broad way – that leads to destruction’ – Matt 7:13.  There is little teaching on the Holy Spirit and our role and relationship to Him. The 5 wise virgins made it their regular practice to come and drink from the Living waters, their faith was alive and required their devotion to Him. The foolish had a dead religious faith that required nothing of them.

If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink.  He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified. John 7:37-39

For as many as are LED by the Spirit of God, these are the Sons of God  Romans 8:14
