We Must First Be a Disciple Before We Go Out To Make More

To ‘go out’ we must first be ourselves disciples of Jesus Christ.  We must be filled with His Spirit and baptized not only in ceremony, but in our entire being.  So, you have people being ‘sent out’ to be ministers and yet they themselves have not been touched by the Living God.  They themselves have not been given a new nature, which has been delivered from the past. This is the problem that modern day Christianity faces, because they do not teach nor promote the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the deliverance from sin we have been given so we may have new life Him and freedom from sin.  It is also not told that in order for us to take this, it will involve a cost to us – our very lives where we ourselves must die – to self, sin and Satan.  We no longer live from our past, our hurts, our regrets and our sin (and thankfully so!) We now live according to the Spirit who will lead us and teach us the things of God.  But, what happens is today’s gospel allows for a double minded form of faith that hangs onto the old life and with the expectation (and demand) to live according to the promises of the new, in Jesus Christ (James 4:7-8).  And this will never produce the Life we are given through His death and resurrection on the Cross.  In order that we be able to take the speck out of our neighbor’s eye, we must first remove the log from our own Matt 7:1-5.

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.  Matt 28

“Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”  Mark 16:15

  1. I know from personal experience the futility of trying to make disciples without being a disciple yourself. When I was 14 years old I got baptized and joined a church because I thought that was the way to become a Christian. I was concerned about the welfare of my friends and tried to persuade some of them to do the same thing. One boy I spoke to actually took this step. He became an unsaved church member, just like I was.

Yet God used my desire to make disciples to help be to really become a disciple. I began listening to a Christian radio program and they produced a series of messages on telling others the gospel. I sent for a book they offered. I think the title was “The Art of Personal Witnessing.” Reading that book showed me that I wasn’t really saved and it also showed me how I could be saved. As a result of that book I became a real disciple.
